In the ecosystem of higher education it seems as though technology is always evolving and some of us spend inordinate amounts of time not only trying to keep up, but in paying attention to what is ahead. Now, with the emergence of #chatGPT, there has never been a better time for educators to take a step back to fully situate technology in teaching and learning. But what exactly is #chatGPT and why is it becoming so popular in #highereducation?

What Is #ChatGPT?
I provided some background in another blog post, but #ChatGPT stands for “Conversational Generative Pre-Trained Transformer” which is a type of #artificialintelligence (#AI) that has been trained to generate natural language conversations. Essentially, it uses a large data set it is trained on and then uses a model to generate responses based on user input. It can understand complex topics and generate responses that are both contextually relevant and informative. This makes it ideal for providing students with customized information they need to succeed in their studies.
Universities can use #AI (#chatbots and/or #machinelearning) to provide personalized support and advice for their students. For example, when a student has questions about course material, they can use this technology to automatically generate answers tailored to their individual needs. Additionally, universities can use #AI to provide assistance with administrative tasks such as registering for classes or checking financial aid status. This would help streamline the process for students and make it easier for them to access the information they need quickly and easily. I am currently fussing around how I can use it to help our students navigate #CreditforPriorLearning at my institution, for example.
The Benefits of #AI For #HigherEducation
#AI, in general (including #chatGPT) is beneficial for higher education institutions because it reduces costs associated with providing personalized guidance for students--and there is nothing more important these days in higher education, save for providing high-impact service with less resources (#amiright??). Furthermore, using chatbot-types of technology help universities provide faster response times which leads to improved satisfaction among students, faculty, and staff. Finally, leveraging #AI technology allows universities to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to digital transformation initiatives within #highereducation institutions. And, in case anyone is wondering...it kind of is a race, even if some of us are reluctant to admit it.
#ChatGPT has quickly become one of the most popular technologies being used in higher education today and whoa, has it received a significant amount of fanfare. Ultimately, this technology shows tremendous potential when it comes to transforming how universities interact with their students – offering a more efficient way of providing guidance while also allowing us to stay ahead of peer institutions in terms of digital transformation initiatives within higher education, in general. All-in-all, #chatGTP is yet one of those developments that marks an inflection point for us -- where will this take us? Not totally sure, my friends, but #IAMHEREFORIT.
